Using a small demo as an example, the speaker will talk about the principles of environment design for animation production: how to collect and process information and generate ideas based on it.
What the talk is about
Tory Polska shows why design research for animation is far more than collecting references. Any task, from a vase to a whole city, needs a solution that fits the project's genre, culture and the director's vision, so you first define the needs from the script and the director's wishes. She recommends gathering material from several sources (Google, Google Maps, Pinterest, Flickr, Instagram), sorting it by style, mood and subject, and using ever more specific search queries. The references are then turned into a "composite image", as seen in well-known animated features built on real places. She also covers common mistakes: information overload, ignoring references, copying too literally, and plagiarism. In a demo she sketches a treehouse quickly and explains why you should offer several truly different options early on. Useful for beginners and concept artists.
