Game Jams and Stimulating Creativity

Talk recording: Game Jams and Stimulating Creativity

What the talk is about

Oleksiy Izvalov talks about game jams as a way to stimulate creativity and growth. He explains the format: tight deadlines (usually 48 hours), work from scratch, a theme announced at the start, and results shared with the community. He reviews major events such as Global Game Jam, Ludum Dare, One Game a Month and Train Jam, and shows with examples how a single theme produces very different games, and how some jam prototypes grew into separate projects. His central idea is that limits on time and theme act like an engine for an idea. Jams help newcomers (a first finished game, teammates, contacts) and veterans (experiments, breaking through a skill plateau, promoting a studio). He gives tips: sleep beforehand, prototype fast, stop adding features in time, don't jam just for the sake of it, and take a prototype to release. Useful for newcomers and indie developers.
