Why is the App-ecosystem dying? The importance of HTML5 technology. How people will return to the web instead of using traditional apps everyday.

What the talk is about

Ilker Aydin and a colleague from Famobi explain why HTML5 games are a promising alternative to mobile app stores. The stores generate huge revenue, but most of it goes to a small group of big publishers with large marketing budgets, user acquisition keeps getting more expensive, and players are tired of ads and notifications. The speaker recalls his own experience: a wrapped online portal with HTML5 games quickly climbed the charts and was just as quickly removed from the stores. In his view, the web offers easy sharing via a link, one codebase for many platforms and a still largely untapped niche. The downsides are longer development, browser limits and weaker payment tools. Tools mentioned include PlayCanvas, three.js, Construct and Haxe. Useful for indie developers and studios considering web platforms.
