What the talk is about

Vasil Prostrelchuk, a lead programmer, explains how his team optimized a Unity game, originally built for PC and Xbox, for PlayStation, Switch and iOS. The main difficulty was heavy dynamic lighting with shadows, volumetric light and fog in a large night-time level, and baking the light was not possible because of memory. He advises avoiding Update and FixedUpdate, caching transform access, subscribing to updates only when needed, and moving math to the Job System. He also covers batching and GPU instancing, including Texture2DArray. For lighting, he suggests reducing radius, disabling unseen lights, dropping shadows and restricting the directional light. He also recommends reading the profiler in Timeline view and configuring Rewired. Useful for programmers porting games to weak platforms.
