What the talk is about
Oleg Malamuzh talks about a trap creative teams often fall into: making a project for themselves while believing they make it for the audience. Using three animatic versions of a Spider-Man trailer, he shows the difference between an author's personal vision and a product built for a specific target audience. He reviews wrong decisions that were later corrected, including the first look of Sonic in the film, and his own experience with Mavka, where a redesign of the heroine first drew a wave of criticism but the film went on to set box office records. His advice: consciously separate personal taste from commercial goals, study the audience in person, test decisions on real members of it, and bring people who know that audience into the team. Useful for game designers, producers and animation creators.
