Applying photogrammetry in computer game development

Talk recording: Applying photogrammetry in computer game development

Fedir Boitsov

What the talk is about

Fedir Boitsov explains how photogrammetry lets game teams quickly get photorealistic 3D models, and walks through a practical workflow. He recommends shooting in overcast, diffuse light, using a tape measure for scale, taking sharp RAW shots at minimal ISO, ideally on a tripod and from many angles, with small details shot separately. Processing follows: clean the scan, close holes, rebuild the mesh (including with the free Instant Meshes tool), create new UVs and bake textures. Baked-in light and shadows can be partly removed with a world normal map method. He shows projects scanning landmarks, buildings, sculptures and people, plus drone and mobile-app capture. Useful for indie studios and artists who want realistic graphics without large modeling budgets.
