The Way of the Samurai, or the Bushido of a 3D Artist

Talk recording: The Way of the Samurai, or the Bushido of a 3D Artist

Vadym Popenko

What the talk is about

Vadym Popenko looks at the state of 3D art production through the eyes of the people who actually make the art, from the early pioneers who became art directors to today's juniors. He shows how new technology, PBR texturing in particular, keeps breaking established pipelines while studios are slow to adapt. Typical junior gaps include not thinking like a modeler, weak use of symmetry, sculpting without grasping proportions and anatomy, UV layout mistakes, and, in PBR, careless use of generators and smart materials without checking references. He also covers seniors who stagnate and need motivation, and communication problems within teams. He urges managers to take on interns, since they grow fast, and to treat quality seriously. Useful for 3D artists, leads and art directors.
