What the talk is about
Yaraslau Kot uses a playful metaphor of tangerines and juices to argue that role-playing games, both live and computer ones, deserve more attention. He sees the RPG as the most capacious genre: whoever learns to make one can make any other kind of game. He advises borrowing from drama, psychology and tabletop games, keeping characters and worlds coherent, and favoring consequences of choices and mysteries over gigantic maps. He also reviews trends: cooperative play and augmented reality (with responsibility for player safety), the "local hero", games as series, mods and fan communities, battle royale, indie and the return of old franchises. In the Q&A he covers working with live players, bringing in theater specialists, and keeping players from getting lost among choices. Useful for narrative and quest designers and game designers.
