What the talk is about
Agata Bednorz explains how an artist can adapt to someone else's visual style when joining a team on an ongoing project. Using the move from 60 Seconds! to 60 Parsecs! at Robot Gentleman, she shows how the team searched for the look of the space setting: from overly colorful and cute sketches to a gloomier, more angular survival atmosphere. She suggests breaking a style down into seven basic elements: shape, form, space, line, texture, color and value, and finding the one trait that defines the style (here, the noses). She also covers character archetypes and poses that show personality. Her tips: study the working files and any style guide, and ask the art director a lot of questions. She also shares a failed attempt at designing a cat. Useful for junior artists entering an existing project.
