What the talk is about

Evgeny Sudak explains what design thinking means for a game designer and why it matters more than any single technique. First, design is constant hypothesis testing: he defines experience as the skill of setting up a controlled experiment, and seniority as the ability to ask deeper questions, such as why and what the real problem is. Second, a designer should not work alone and needs an opponent. A second opinion should be asked to hunt for holes, not to confirm. Third, unlike an artist, a game designer solves problems, communicates their vision, is ready to start from scratch, and treats constraints as direction while still questioning them. He recommends books on systems design, mechanics and rationality, and answers questions on testing mechanics, planning tools and mixing genres. Useful for junior and middle designers.
