What the talk is about

Oleh Malamuzh talks about mixing animation styles and why it can become a competitive advantage. He offers a simple 3×3 matrix: three schools (American, French, Japanese) and three levels of exaggeration, from realistic to cartoony. The system helps animators, producers and art directors agree on a style of movement; the schools differ in timing and spacing. As examples of a successful mix he cites Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Disney's experiments, and in games only a few occasional attempts. He advises combining no more than two or three styles, keeping animators on the same characters, testing with the audience, and mixing only when it supports the story. Useful for animators, directors, producers and art directors looking for a distinctive visual style for their project.
