What the talk is about
Mykola Khimych explains how to build developer tools in Unity so that games can be made faster and more efficiently. A tool is always a separate project: it takes time, needs maintenance after Unity updates, and is only justified if it truly saves time. First decide who it is for: programmers rarely need validators, while designers benefit from input validation. To avoid writing documentation, he suggests tooltips, help boxes, color indication (red, yellow, green) and hiding unneeded fields and buttons. He demonstrates an editor for a character-parts database aimed at designers. He also covers how to get a team to adopt the tools, and editor code practices: handle changes through change checks, and avoid putting commands directly into OnInspectorGUI. Useful for Unity developers and tech leads.
