What the talk is about
Steve Cuss argues that developing yourself as a leader is the same thing as developing your team and your game. He draws on research showing that emotions are contagious and that a leader's expectations shape team results. He says team motivation should be built the way you motivate players: autonomy, mastery, and purpose or relatedness. He contrasts a culture of fear with a space where people are asked for a lot but feel safe to speak up. He then offers seven practices: authenticity, a quiet ego, treating different kinds of failure differently, patience, staying present, defining goals by player benefit rather than tasks, and honest feedback, with praise in public and criticism in private. Useful for leads, producers, and managers of game teams.
