What the talk is about

Taewon Yun shares his view of how the game industry will change over the next few years. He sees a cycle of roughly five years: an era of distribution dominance (Steam, App Store, Google Play) gives way to an era of content, when platforms compete and invest in quality games. Second, mobile spent the past decade reducing friction while PC and console deepened the experience; cloud gaming combines both and may matter most in Asia, where consoles were never widespread. Third, esports should be built around the viewing experience, and the ownership and governance of leagues needs rethinking. Fourth, games should be designed from the start for multiple platforms, screen sizes and control schemes, and "watching is playing" could become the next big direction. Useful for designers, producers and studio leaders planning a three-to-five-year strategy.
