In her lecture Katerina will describe main ways how to release a game, as well as point out when it makes sense to go self-publishing and when with a publisher. Talking about publishers she will share her vision on what is important to pay attention to, who are those publishers, how and where to find them, and some tips&tricks while dealing with them.

What the talk is about

Katerina Burbela compares two ways to release a game: self-publishing and working with a publisher. For self-publishing, a team must honestly assess whether it can handle platforms, distribution, PR and marketing, localization for different regions, legal matters and resources. A publisher can bring user acquisition, marketing, community work, QA, localization, licenses, expertise and funding, but in return asks for revenue share, sometimes IP and source code rights, creative control, exclusivity and investment recoupment. She suggests finding publishers through search, conferences, meetups, game jams, hubs and government programs. She also gives advice on pitching, follow-ups, NDAs, polished builds and key contract points: revenue share, minimum guarantee, marketing commitments, payment terms and reporting. Useful for indie developers choosing a release model.
