What the talk is about

Dmytro Vusatyi explains what makes a real-time VFX artist valuable to a client studio and shares a case study of creating effects for Gwent together with CD Projekt Red. In his view, artists are judged on four things: communication, management and deadlines, adherence to technical requirements, and visual quality. He advises clarifying the engine, references, and limits on textures, polygons and particles up front, keeping notes on client preferences, and using a delivery checklist. He then walks through the pipeline: concepts and references, rough timings, final textures, previews, revisions, and optimization. He stresses building textures in Substance Designer, packing atlases, using shaders instead of large flipbooks, and animation instead of particle systems where possible. Useful for VFX artists and freelancers working with clients.
