What the talk is about

Alina Brazdeikene tells the story of making a mobile narrative game based on The X-Files (released as Deep State), from the pitch to the rights holder through to launch. She describes how the team adapted the series into a chapter-based investigation game, with each chapter in its own genre and with branching choices. This required building an in-house tool for scripts, dialogues and localization. She shares the pains of working with a brand: canon and requirements shifting after a new season aired, approvals of actors' likenesses, and a legal change of title. Her conclusions: a dream project needs preparation, a team shouldn't split effort between content and the core game, a strong personal vision can suppress the team's initiative, and you shouldn't count on a licensor's marketing. Useful for producers, writers and teams working with licenses.
