What the talk is about
Mykhailo Kiiashko explains what PBR (physically based rendering) is and how it helps both artists and programmers. He stresses that it is not "physically correct" rendering but a physically plausible approximation of how light behaves. It rests on three principles: microfacet theory, energy conservation and the BRDF. The talk then covers the two main material workflows, metalness/roughness and specular/glossiness, the metallic, roughness and albedo maps, real-world reference values and photogrammetry. He also discusses shaders and visual shader editors that give artists freedom, and why PBR materials look consistent under any lighting. In the Q&A he addresses grayscale values in metal masks and converting materials between workflows. Useful for 3D artists, technical artists and graphics programmers.
