What the talk is about

Serhii Syrobabin covers loot boxes, from collectible cards in cigarette packs, card games and Japanese gachapon machines to their arrival in online and mobile games. He lists the strengths of the mechanic: selling anticipation, easy content additions, rewards for logins and activity, and the emotion of opening. The downsides are a damaged reputation and new regulation. He compares loot boxes with the battle pass. He then covers presentation (fitting the setting, roulette, delayed reveal, event boxes) and internal design: chest tiers, duplicates, slots, percentage versus weight-based drops, pricing and expected value checks, "lucky" chests, rotation and ads. He closes with restrictions in Belgium, the EU and China. Useful for game designers and product managers planning monetization.
